Academic and English requirements

IELTS Academic is widely accepted, and many institutions also accept TOEFL and other tests. Minimum scores depend on the institution and level, and some programmes require higher bands.

Entry requirements are set by each institution and course. There is no single score that guarantees admission. Need to book a test? See IELTS/TOEFL registration assistance.

Application steps

  1. Choose between college and university pathways
  2. Confirm the institution is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  3. Apply directly to the institution
  4. Receive your letter of acceptance and pay any required deposit
  5. Gather study permit documents, including a provincial attestation letter where required
  6. Submit your study permit application online and give biometrics

Intakes: September is the main intake; January and May intakes are available at many institutions.

Tuition and living costs

Speak with a counsellor for current estimates

We don’t publish fixed figures on this page. Tuition, living costs and the funds you must show for a visa change regularly and differ by institution and city. A counsellor will help you build a realistic, current estimate using official sources.

Finding scholarships

Scholarships for international students in Canada come mainly from individual institutions, often as entrance awards. Colleges usually offer fewer scholarships than universities. Check each institution’s awards pages and ask a counsellor to help you shortlist.

HIC does not award scholarships and cannot guarantee funding.

Study permit

Most students need a study permit, applied for online with a letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution and proof of funds, among other requirements. Canada’s rules have changed several times in recent years, so we check the current requirements with you before you apply.
